Baby Bargain Book

Help ! In search of a list of the best baby items and what to avoid?
having a baby in november and trying to do as much research as possible. I have been reading various book (baby Bargains) and different websites, but nothing compares to parents input, that have actually tried these things. I do admit I am a sucker for good design, but fuctionality is key too. We are not independantly wealthy- so I can’t spend a ton – but I do know if there are a few key things that cost a little more we would go for it – if it is worth it – but some things like baby wipe warmers I have to wonder – are they really worth it ? Anyways – any feed back would be wonderful ! Also we will be having a shower -so that always helps!
If you go to websites to register at places like Babies R Us, you will find that they have things called “The New Parents Checklist”. To get more specific advice on products, you probably need to narrow your request here to a few specific areas that you are having trouble with. I have a baby wipe warmer and bottle warmer that you can have — they were wastes of money for me. LOL. For a stroller, I bought two…. a really expensive bugaboo chameleon ($900) and an inexpensive frame stroller that your infant’s car seat snaps into….called a “Snap-n-Go” ($50). For the first six months, I found the snap-n-go much easier to use and lighter….and easier to get in and out of the car. After the first six months, I bought a $20 umbrella stroller that I now keep in the car for all purpose use. The expensive Chameleon is great for use around the neighborhood or if you are going somewhere to visit like New York where you do a lot of foot traffic over bumpy sidewalks…..but if I had it to do all over again, I would have skipped that purchase completely.
Infant car seats….I used consumer reports. Britax ($250) and Graco Snugride ($99) were ranked #1 and #2 in safety when I purchased. Graco was the most universally compatible with stroller systems and the like so I chose it. I am very happy with this purchase.
Swings….I received a really nice one as a gift….my son screamed everytime we put him in it. It became the living room dust collector, but many moms swear by them. I suggest bright colors with things of interest that they can look at or play with even.
I love my Baby Bjorn carrier, and lots of moms swear by baby slings. You should definitely have something like that.
If your baby is going to be breastfed, get a nursing pillow that actually velcros around your waist. Also consider getting a “Hooter Hider” apron. It will help when mom is away from home and needs to nurse.
For diaper disposal, I recommend the diaper champ. It is inexpensive and you can use regular trash bags instead of “special” expensive bags that are always out of stock.
Overall, I would say don’t stress out too much. Your child will love certain things and hate others. You won’t get everything right on purchases….it is just part of the new mom/dad initiation.
Hope this helps.
